Abstract

In the spheres of States and governments, public universities face greater challenges to compete with other political and social sectors and obtain contributions to cover their budget items and coverage of their programs. In this way, these public institutions venture into the struggles of the spheres of economic and political power, spaces where, in turn, attempts will be made to shape or influence their structures, alter their agendas and social and cultural patterns, and affirm objectives and ideologies that contribute to . the validity and culture of success proposed by the existing capitalist development models, arbitrated by power groups that hegemonize the development project in force. The Latin American university has been a bastion of struggles and social political practices around the implementation of capitalist development models. Proposals for present and future cohesion and social equality in society have come from its premises. To delve into this topic, we introduce the best-known theoretical studies, particularly those that aim to position higher education as a panacea to combat poverty and where investment in education inadvertently translates into any improvement in society.
