In this essay, we will analyse the concept of History in the modern period that begins with the Enlightenment, starting with Voltaire, Rousseau, Kant and Vico. We will focus on the role of History in Philosophy and in the Sciences of the Spirit, in the various Philosophies of History that accomplish a universal meaning in modernity. The idea of a universal history acquires a great influence in the modern epoch through Voltaire, Herder, Vico, Kant and Hegel. Modern and contemporary historians concentrate on the writing of history, on the conquest of historical objectivity, and on its search for truth.
