Abstract

This article is about a Zapotec carved stone of the Postclassic period. The monument was documented near to a spring. This spring was an important sacred place between the ancient Zapotec of the mountains.

The topic of this stone is the serpent and its association with water and rain deities, and also with ideas about quadripartite time and space. In its interpretation we consider the imaginery of other archaeological Zapotec remains, in add to mentions in historical sources and ethnographic information. The relevance of this article is because of the Zapotec sculpture of the Sierra Juárez, until recent dates, was little documented, specially that related with Prehispanic cosmovision.
