Abstract

Most of the archaeological community, especially those who study lithic technology, have not paid much attention to the extraction sites for raw materials for the elaboration of tools of all kinds, that is, the sources. There is, what I call a "disconnection" in our discipline between what we know about the sources per se and what happens in terms of human behavior and its analysis. In this sense, my interest in this text revolves around commenting on the problems that exist when studying obsidian deposits, as well as their possible solutions, in order to reconstruct the organization of the lithic technology of any society of the past. through a solid empirical foundation based on data and adequate methodologies in this field, in addition to an archaeometric study with a greater systematization that allows us to reconstruct the initial steps of the productive chain and its relationship with the other links. In the end, I would like to draw attention to the protection of obsidian deposits, especially those that still present the vestiges of pre-Hispanic mines that, up to now in Mexico, although some are registered as archaeological sites, are not taken into account for general conservation.
