Abstract

The practice of midwifery is represented in the imaginary as a separate task from the rest of the medical activities since supernatural and witchcraft elements have been attributed to it at all times; for being a task traditionally entrusted to women, it has suffered its same historical disqualification. However, midwifery persevered over time, offering women possibilities compatible with beliefs and customs that modern medicine does not contemplate, related to aspects of their daily lives and family intimacy. Likewise, midwifery in Mexico concentrates the knowledge of generations of midwives that date back to the pre-Hispanic period and that are still in force in the new generations, after a period of adaptation and rescue and in a constant effort to eradicate the stigmas that weigh on it.
