"Aquellos tiempos", by Colette Lilly (1937-1917) with photographs by John Lilly (1937-2007), represents a work that documents the lives of two visual anthropologists on their journey through the Huichol mountain range in the state of Jalisco during the period 1969-1986. The couple developed a long work as researchers and documentary filmmakers in the Wixárika community of Santa Catarina Cuexcomatitlán, addressing different cultural ethnological and political issues.
In the 90 photographs that make up the work you can see the human condition of the Huichol, as an original people that not only shows a wide cultural repertoire, but also the material conditions of life of a social group that has suffered the onslaught of colonization Western, dismemberment and social marginalization of their communities. The main purpose of the Lilly's journey through the Sierra Madre Occidental and the encounter with the Huichols was to preserve the Wixarika culture through visual memory and, on the other hand, the realization of a meticulous documentary research work for 17 years that resulted in its work as social activists, defenders of the Huichol route and the sacred territory of Huirikuta.
