Abstract

In Mexico, forensic botany has not developed as in other countries on the American Continent, where the evidence offered by this discipline is used to resolve different cases. This work presents some theoretical aspects of the work of forensic botany, its contributions to forensic sciences and what is needed to carry out this type of research in Mexico.

Author Biographies

  • Diana Martínez Yrizar, Instituto de Investigaciones Antropológicas - UNAM

    She has a degree in Archeology from the National School of Anthropology and History and a master's degree in Anthropology from the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the UNAM. She is currently attached to the Paleoethnobotany and Paleoenvironment Laboratory of the UNAM Anthropological Research Institute. Responsible for the analysis of macrobotanical remains of samples from archaeological contexts. Participates in various research projects carrying out the analysis of botanical samples; as well as in academic events related to paleoethnobotany. He participates in historical archeology carrying out paleographic work in various archives such as the General Archive of the Nation. She has participated in National and International conferences as a speaker and moderator, and is co-author of articles and book chapters.  He also teaches classes in the Mesoamerican Studies Postgraduate Program and actively participates in anthropology dissemination and dissemination activities.   • Carmen Cristina Adriano Morán, Instituto de Investigaciones Antropológicas - UNAM

    Bachelor's degree in Biology and Master's degree in Science (Plant Biology) at the Faculty of Sciences-UNAM.  Attached to the Paleoethnobotany and Paleoenvironment Laboratory of the Anthropological Research Institute – UNAM. He has collaborated in more than 25 archaeological projects carrying out sampling, flotation, separation and identification of botanical materials from sediments from archaeological excavations and stratigraphic profiles, determining carbonized wood, fibers and phytoliths. His topics of interest: reconstruction of the environment (vegetation) that surrounded pre-Hispanic settlements and the use of plant resources by their inhabitants.
