This work has the objective of showing in detail the methodological process to follow to achieve a comprehensive contextualization through the formal analysis of space. Said analysis uses a series of data from various information sources where the physical and cultural elements of the research site are indicated. The case study was the Presa de la Luz archaeological site, in the Municipality of Jesús María, Jalisco, where each of the elements considered for the investigation were identified and explained. The formal analysis corresponds to the first stage of the landscape analysis proposed by Felipe Criado; however, it is at this moment in which several hypotheses arise to formulate interpretations of the behavior of past societies, since it is supported by the natural and cultural elements of the archaeological record. It is concluded that the environmental conditions favored human groups to establish settlements around the Presa de la Luz and justify that the presence of several accesses through its reliefs made possible the location of a ceremonial center registered as the Cerrito de los Agaves.
