Abstract
Mexico is the fifth largest strawberry producer in the world and the State of Michoacán is the main national supplier, providing more than 62% of this fruit. Two of the main strawberry pathogens are Botrytis cinerea causing fruit rot and Colletotrichum species inducing anthracnose. Due to the need to evaluate native cultivable microorganisms that can be used as biological control, this work was proposed to evaluate the antagonistic capacity offered by bacteria of different genera (Bacillus sp., Gluconobacter sp., Paenibacillus sp. and Streptomyces sp.) against the pathogens B. cinerea and Colletotrichum sp. in in vitro confrontations. The fungi were isolated from the infected strawberry and once purified, they were confronted in dual cultures against the bacteria in PDA culture medium, recording the data and obtaining the percentage of inhibition after seven days of growth. The four bacteria showed high inhibition capacity: Bacillus sp. and Streptomyces sp. were the ones that inhibited the growth of Colletotrichum mycelium by more than 80%, while Bacillus and Gluconobacter cerinus reduced B. cinerea by more than 79%. This work will serve to further study and evaluate the antifungal activity of native organisms to combat strawberry crop pathogens.
