Brugmansia arborea is a shrub that belongs to the Solanaceae family. This botanical family is known to contain a wide range of secondary metabolites; especially alkaloids derived from the tropane groups, amides, flavonoids and terpenes. The objective of the work was to characterize the ethanolic extract of Brugmansia arborea flowers by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). An ethanolic extract was prepared with the flowers of the plant from which a qualitative chemical characterization was carried out (organoleptic tests and FTIR spectroscopy). As results, an acidic pH (5.7) and a yield of 63% were found. For chemical characterization by FTIR spectroscopy, different chemical compounds were detected, among the most outstanding and in highest concentration were the bands of 1040 and 1595 cm-1, related to the active principes flavonoids and alkaloids respectively. It is concluded that thanks to FTIR spectroscopy analysis, the chemical vibrations of the compounds in the extract can be identified in a simple and rapid way, showing different functional groups and achieving a qualitative chemical characterization.
