Abstract
This article presents a reading based on the interpretation of the story “The fault is of the Tlaxcaltecas” by Elena Garro. This reading does not follow the approach that the narrator and protagonist of the story is Doña Marina, the Malinche, but rather it can symbolically represent Isabel of Moctezuma, the daughter of Emperor Moctezuma Xocoyotzi. Through passages from the story and an analysis of the bibliography of the tlatoani's daughter, it is possible to find similarities between the lives of these women who were contemporaries, as well as rethink the identity of the protagonist of the story.
