Abstract

Objective and method study: a qualitative phenomenological hermeneutic study was developed to explore the knowledge about menarche held by the parents of adolescent daughters in the township of Malagana (Bolivar Colombia). Convenience sampling (10 subjects) was selected and a structured interview was applied until data saturation was obtained Results: general knowledge about menarche corresponded to the valid recognition as the first menstruation, it was also considered as a process related to body growth and development among women, and menarche is understoodas the moment when cramps appear. Regarding to the reasons for the onset of menarche, it is conceived as a natural process, and some parents relate it to divine causes, while others see it as a phenomenon of evacuation . Conclusions: parents have a fair to good knowledge of menarche, influenced by different social, cultural and family practices that have conditioned their ways of thinking and understanding the world around the first menstruation
