This article analyzes the cultural interpretation of the criminal case of las Poquianchis, in the sensationalist magazine Alarma, and especially in Jorge Ibargüengoitia's novel Las muertas and Felipe Cazals' film Las Poquianchis. Our reading locates Ibargüengoitia's creation from what we call (following Ana Rosa Domenella's criticism) a place of uncertainty, while Cazals creates his film with a clear ideological agenda: the mexican Revolutionary left. Both these artists, no matter how much they differ in their ideology share a similar cultural standpoint –in opposition to Alarma–; to them, culture needs to empower readers and cinema viewers with a high level of social criticism.
