Abstract
A “Detective reader” is a reading character who is supported or motivated by a text to
investigate about a past enigma. In this paper the detective reader is analyzed in El desfile del amor
(The Love Parade) by Sergio Pitol, to find answers to the following questions: how the detective
reader is represented, what and how he/she reads, and the way the reading benefits or makes the
investigation difficult. The theoretical approach of this essay is interdisciplinary and it is supported by
concepts of culture, historiography, and literary theory.
Keywords: Sergio Pitol, reading, hermeneutics, new historicism, metafiction.
