Abstract

The objective of this study is to synthesize and analyze the existing evidence on health problems experienced by parents of children in a longterm hospital stay. MeMethod:An integrative review was carried out and scientific articles were selected from the MEDLINE, SciELO and CINAHL databases. Only parents of children (aged 0 18 years) undergoing longterm hospitalizations were included. Parents with an y type of mental or psychiatric disorder were excluded from the review. A sixstep method was used to develop the review and analyze the results. Results:The stay of a child inthe hospital entails important changes in the routines and well being of a fa mily. Parents need the care of nurses, whose main focus is children. Hospitalization of children often causes anxiety in parents, as well as stress and sleep disturbances This condition can also trigger other pathologies such as hypertension, obesity, typ e II diabetes mellitus or stroke. Anxiety has higher rates in mothers of male children . Discussion and conclusions: The prolonged hospitalization of a child entails an important and challenging adaptation of the parents that affects their health and well being. Therefore, nursing interventions should focus on identifying the adversities experienced by the parents, so that measures can be taken to improve the adjustment process and, consequently, promote the well-being of the parents in addition to the healing process. their children. In this sense, meeting the expectations of family centered care is an additional challenge for pediatric nurses. Future studies are needed on the strategies used by parents during the prolonged hospitalization of their child and its evaluation
